Today, many lawyers, notaries, accountants, financial planners, and other professional advisors work with Shuswap Community Foundation.
Our goal is to help advisors help their clients. As clients increase their knowledge about their options, they expect their advisor to help them create innovative, comprehensive financial plans that take care of their families and friends, minimize taxes, and reflect their values.
Professional Advisors work with SCF to equip themselves with tools and resources that allow them to talk about their client's social capital. As a professional advisor, you work with your clients to create and realize their personal philanthropic vision. SCF’s knowledge of community issues, experienced granting, and flexible giving options, can provide you with the resources you need to better serve your clients.
At SCF your clients have the flexibility to shape their own charitable giving to reflect their personal goals and desires. Whether they want to address an urgent need in the community, memorialize a loved one, or help a charity with a project, we have a giving option to help them make an impact and improve the lives of others in the community.
- Charitable giving can generate significant tax benefits in both annual and estate tax situations – your client may not be aware of this opportunity.
- Your client may never have mentioned an interest in charitable giving – usually because of a lack of information about the range and scope of opportunity. You can offer your client an opportunity to become informed without any obligation.
- Your client may think that his/her resources are not sufficient to consider charitable giving. You can show your client a variety of creative ways to make a gift that is compatible with his/her personal and financial circumstances.
By partnering with SCF, professional advisors like you can help your clients fulfill their charitable goals. We work with your clients to set up an endowment fund – a permanent investment of capital that benefits the community in perpetuity and creates a personal or family legacy. Only the fund’s income is granted out so the fund keeps on giving year after year.
The Foundation employs the services of Mawer Investment Management to manage the $8.1 million currently held in the capital fund. (View our Investment Policy)
Donations to SCF are held in a permanent capital fund, the earnings on which support projects in the Shuswap year after year. All donors are recognized in the reports and records of the Foundation unless they request anonymity.

The Foundation provides a vehicle for interested donors to support specific charities, fields of interest, specific geographic areas, scholarships or the general welfare of our community - forever. Please view our most recent Annual Report and Vital Signs Report.
Many individuals and families establish funds with a community foundation, as a minimal fee alternative to a private foundation. See Community vs Private.

Gifts of Legacy
An endowment fund is a forever legacy and a generous commitment of giving back to your community. You and your family can build this fund, receiving charitable tax receipts which can be applied to reduce your income tax. A bequest from your estate will continue to grow the fund and your children’s, children’s, children can stay involved in the Endowment for many years to come.
Involving your children and grandchildren in philanthropy is an excellent way to share your beliefs and your values. A family endowment fund established with a community foundation is a great place to start.
This is where a professional advisor, lawyer and accountant can assist you in establishing the will and setting out your wishes. Your family and your philanthropic requests can be documented accordingly.
A Board director or a staff member at Shuswap Community Foundation would be pleased to discuss with you the types of funds, such as discretionary or donor directed funds.
